Living in Forest Hill

Forest Hill is one of San Francisco’s eight original master-planned residence parks, with development beginning in 1912. Its wide, curving streets — laid out for the horses and carriages of the era — wind up a wooded hillside lined with large, architecturally distinguished homes. To this day the neighborhood has no condominiums or multi-unit buildings, a rarity in San Francisco that has preserved its quiet, single-family character for more than a century.

The neighborhood’s crown jewel is the Forest Hill Clubhouse, designed by acclaimed architect Bernard Maybeck (of Palace of Fine Arts fame) and built in 1919 as the community’s gathering place. Forest Hill is also home to two Maybeck-designed residences, making it a destination for lovers of early-20th-century architecture. Just downhill sits West Portal Village for everyday shopping and dining, and the Forest Hill Muni Metro station puts downtown under 20 minutes away.

Forest Hill draws families with its quiet streets, large homes, and access to nearby schools, including West Portal Elementary and St. Brendan School just downhill. Transit is a genuine advantage: the Forest Hill Muni Metro station (one of the system’s original stations) and nearby West Portal station carry the K, L, and M lines through the Twin Peaks Tunnel, putting Union Square and the Financial District under 20 minutes away. Portola Drive and Laguna Honda Boulevard connect quickly to I-280 and the rest of the city.
