About Liberty Hill

Liberty Hill is a small, storied pocket on the eastern slope above Dolores Park — roughly bounded by 20th, Mission, Dolores, and 22nd Streets, on the border of the Mission and Dolores Heights. Established in the 1860s, it’s one of San Francisco’s earliest residential “suburbs,” and today it’s protected as the Liberty-Hill Historic District, a San Francisco Designated Landmark since 1985.

What makes it special is the architecture: block after block of remarkably intact Victorian homes in Italianate, Stick, and Queen Anne styles. The district runs the full social range of its era — from the trim workingman’s cottages on Lexington and San Carlos Streets to the grand, individually designed residences on Liberty and Fair Oaks. Because the 1906 firestorm was halted just to the north at 20th Street, an extraordinary number of these original homes survive, making Liberty Hill one of the city’s finest places to see Victorian San Francisco intact.
