Nob Hill rises in the heart of northeast San Francisco, one of the city’s original “seven hills” and long its most prestigious. In the 19th century the railroad and silver barons — the “nobs” — built their mansions up here; after the 1906 fire leveled them, the hill was reborn as a district of grand hotels, Grace Cathedral, and stately apartment buildings. Today it’s an elegant, central, walkable neighborhood of view condos, classic co-ops, and luxury flats.

The crown of the hill is Grace Cathedral and leafy Huntington Park, ringed by landmark hotels like the Fairmont and the Mark Hopkins. The cable cars climb right over the summit — the hill, famously, that the cable car was invented to conquer — and the shops and restaurants of Polk Street, Russian Hill, and Chinatown are all a short walk away.
