Golden Gate Heights is an elevated, hilly enclave tucked into the hills above the Sunset District on San Francisco’s west side — a quieter, leafier, view-blessed counterpart to the flatland Avenues below. Its winding streets climb a series of small summits, and on clear days much of the neighborhood sits above the fog line, with sweeping views of the Pacific, Golden Gate Park, and the city. Homes here are larger and more varied than the classic Sunset rows — including custom and view-oriented houses prized for their light and outlooks.

The neighborhood’s signature attractions are its parks and stairways: Grand View Park (“Turtle Hill”), the beloved mosaic 16th Avenue Tiled Steps, and Hawk Hill, all offering some of the best views in San Francisco. Everyday shopping and dining are a short descent into the Inner and Central Sunset along Irving and Noriega (see our Central Sunset guide), with the N-Judah and L-Taraval Muni Metro nearby.

Golden Gate Heights is served by the Sunset’s neighborhood public and private schools, and despite its tucked-away feel it’s well connected: the N-Judah and L-Taraval Muni Metro lines run along the base of the hills toward downtown, and Sunset Boulevard and 19th Avenue (Highway 1) are close by for the bridges and Peninsula.
